Senftenberg Castle Park is a historically significant landscape park in the heart of the town. It was laid out from 1912 under Mayor Kieback as the ‘Kaiser Wilhelm Park’. The remains of the former castle pond, which once surrounded the castle, were drained. The original tree population has been preserved to this day.
There are several monuments in the castle park, including the Turnvater Jahn monument erected by the Germania gymnastics club in 1911 and the memorial to the victims of fascism and militarism created by Ernst Sauer in 1962.
The castle pond, which is visually divided into a large and a small pond by an arched bridge, and an East Asian-style pavilion lend the castle park a romantic atmosphere. The ponds are fed by canals, some of which run underground, which flow around the castle to the east and north from the Black Elster. Senftenberg Zoo is also located in the castle park and is bordered by the ramparts of the castle and the Black Elster.
The castle park was partially redesigned between 2010 and 2012. In the process, the remains of the former castle pond were turned into today's castle ponds modelled on the historical ones. In addition, the paths and visual connections in the castle park were upgraded to create an attractive functional and design link between the old town and Lake Senftenberg with its town harbour.
Today, the castle park is a popular place for walks, nature observation and cultural events. The combination of historical significance, scenic beauty and cultural offerings makes it a special place in Senftenberg.
